Central blocking action of ketamine anaesthesia on the visceral alerting and chemoreceptor reflex responses in the cat

In cats under ketamine anesthesia, full visceral alerting responses could be evoked from the hypothalamic defense area but not from the amygdala, amygdalo-hypothalamic pathway or, as a reflex, by carotid chemoreceptor stimulation. Ketamine blocks some forebrain synapses involved in the mediation of these responses and is therefore an unsuitable anesthetic for their comprehensive study.
