Induction of septic shock in 20 calves resulted in hypokinetic (12), hyperkinetic (3) and combination of hyper- and hypokinetic (5) cardiovascular dynamics. Alterations in blood true glucose were flow-linked and the degree of hypoglycemia in later stages of shock appeared to influence survival time. A rise in lactic acid evidenced a variable pattern, the magnitude being greatest in hypokinetic shock. A reasonable correspondence between significant hypoglycemia and hyperlactiacedemia was a characteristic feature of terminal stages of hypokinetic shock. Significant hyperkalemia in terminal stages of shock was independent of acid-base status. There was no evidence of involvement of chloride during this syndrome in any kinetic status. These features in calves were characteristically different from those observed in the other species.
