Septic shock was induced experimentally in six clinically healthy 1-1 1/2 yr old male cow calves by strangulating a segment of the jejunum. Variations in Na+, K+ and Cl- were assessed in plasma, cerebrospinal fluid, urine and the saliva during progression of shock. Plasma Na+ and Cl- did not vary appreciably but K+ increased significantly. Salivary Na+ K+ and Cl- showed marked increase. However, urinary Na+ and Cl- decreased significantly. These findings highlight the role played by the salivary glands and kidneys in maintaining the electrolyte homeostasis in this species.
