Nutritional muscular dystrophy (NMD) was induced in 4 groups of buffalo calves 50 to 70 days old by giving 30 ml cod liver oil (CLO)/calf daily in addition to a basal diet until clinical signs appeared. Of these, one group was given CLO only, one group was given 200 i.u. vitamin E/calf daily, one group was given 1 ppm selenium/calf daily and one group was given 200 i.u. vitamin E and 1 ppm Se/calf daily, in addition to CLO. A fifth group was untreated. In calves with natural NMD serum iron concentration was 195 mu g/100 ml and copper was 189 mu g/100 ml. In calves with induced NMD given CLO only, plasma Fe was 46 and 64 mu g/100 ml at weeks 1 and 11, respectively; 48 and 37 in those given CLO and vitamin E; 23 and 15 in those given CLO and Se; 37 and 24 mu g/100 ml in those given CLO with Se and vitamin E. Control values were 247 and 266 mu g/100 ml. In calves with induced NMD serum Cu was 337 and 625 mu g/100 ml at weeks 1 and 11, respectively for controls; 181 and unstated for those given CLO; 285 and 333 for those given CLO and vitamin E; 320 and 347 for those given CLO and selenium; 230 and 304 mu g/100 ml for those given CLO with Se and vitamin E.
