Histological and ultrastructural changes in skin lesions produced after inoculation of vaccinia virus are studied in rabbits. Soon after the primary vaccination, an acute necrotizing inflammatory reaction, mainly involving the epidermis, occurs which also extends to the dermis. Complete resolution occurs by 14-21 days. The viral particles are demonstrable in the epidermal cells but not in the dermis by EM. The changes are minimal; healing is rapid after the 2nd vaccination in these animals.
