For 10 days male Wistar rats weighing 80 to 100 g were given 20 000 IU retinol in groundnut oil daily or groundnut oil alone. They were killed 30 min after they had been given [3H]galactose intraperitoneally. Incorporation of [3H]galactose into glycoproteins of liver, heart, lung and serum and into glycolipids of lung and serum was increased and into glycolipids of liver was decreased in rats given retinol. Retinol increased the incorporation of [3H]galactose into serum high-density lipoprotein but did not affect it in low-density lipoprotein.
