Rats were exposed to clean air or air with ozone 0.4/106 for 1 to 14 days. After 1 and 4 days of exposure to ozone, retinol in serum decreased to 86 and 84% of control values. Although it is difficult to explain the reason why serum retinol decreased transiently in the early stage of O3 exposure at present, serum retinol seems at least in part to be preferentially absorbed by the respiratory system because the airway epithelium is repaired by cell proliferation in the early stage of exposures to 0.2-0.4 ppm O3. Alternatively, O3 exposures may affect vitamin A metabolism. The mechanism of the decrease in serum retinol and involvement of vitamin A in maintenance of the normal airway epithelium are under investigation.
