Susceptibility of Pupae of Two Cocoon-forming Lepidopterous Species to the Entomogenous Nematode, Neoaplectana carpocapsae (Rhabditida: Steinernematidae)

The ability of N. carpocapsae to infect pupae of Galleria mellonella and Bombyx mori within their silken cocoons is reported. In laboratory experiments the infection rate of pupae with or without cocoons was 100% for both species. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the silken cocoons of these species are sufficiently porous to allow infective juveniles to pass through the silk layers.
