In Nigeria metrifonate was given orally at a dose 10 mg/kg body-weight, for up to 3 doses (at 2-week intervals), to 145 school children (6 to 15 years old) infected with S. haematobium. 114 (78.6%) of the children tolerated the drug well; the others had various minimal and transient side-effects. The over-all cure rates (absence of ova in urine) one month after the 3rd dose were 100, 91 and 86% for those with light, moderate and heavy infections, respectively. Some children who were cured still had some haematuria and proteinuria.
