The distribution of Schistosoma mansoni and S. haematobium in man in East Africa is reviewed. It is suggested that the absence of endemic S. mansoni along the East African coast is due to the absence of Biomphalaria which has probably been unable to penetrate into the zone because of ecological barriers.
