Prevalence of Schistosoma mansoni and Schistosoma haematobium in Kitui District, Kenya

In Kitui district of Kenya, Schistosoma mansoni was detected in 140 (6.1%) of 2295 schoolchildren and S. haematobium in 81 (3.3%) of 2435. Incidence was highest in the 10 to 14 years age group and S. haematobium was more common in males than females. Biomphalaria pfeifferi and Bulinus africanus were found in the area and the epidemiology is discussed. Hookworm, Trichuris trichiura and, less frequently, Ascaris lumbricoides and Hymenolepis nana were also found and their incidences are tabulated by geographic divisions. In a district survey in Kenya, Entamoeba coli was the most common intestinal parasite detected in 2295 schoolchildren. E. histolytica and Endolimax nana were also found and the incidences are tabulated by geographic divisions.
