Schistosoma haematobium in rural school children in Nigeria

A survey of Schistosoma haematobium infection was carried out in 722 rural school children (aged between 5 and 19 years) in Emu, Nigeria. Urine analysis showed that, of the 254 (35.2%) excreting S. haematobium ova, 196 (27.2%) had haematuria. Of the 239 children aged between 5 and 9 years, 132 (55.3%) excreted S. haematobium ova and 103 (43.1%) had haematuria. Of the 317 children aged between 10 and 14 years, 79 (24.9%) excreted S. haematobium ova and 68 (21.5%) had haematuria. Of the 166 individuals aged between 15 and 19 years, 43 (25.9%) excreted S. haematobium ova and 25 (15.1%) had haematuria. Of the 383 males examined, 114 (29.8%) excreted S. haematobium ova while 140 of 340 females (41.2%) had ova present in their samples.
