Histamine in relation to Hymenolepis nana infection in rats

The histamine content of rat intestines harbouring cysticercoids or adult worms of Hymenolepis nana was evaluated. Intestinal tissues infected with cysticercoids developing from eggs contained 1.5 to 2.0 times more histamine than those of normal rats, but no increase in histamine was recorded in intestines infected with fully developed cysticercoids obtained from beetles. Intestines harbouring adult worms, as a result of feeding 100 eggs/rat, had 1.9 to 8.3 times more histamine than normal intestines, but only a slight increase in histamine was found when the adults matured from cysticercoids. H. nana-infected mice did not show increased histamine sensitivity.
