The anti-hepatitis B core antigen [anti-HBc] specific IgG and IgM in sera of hepatoma patients was studied. Radioimmunoassay was used to detect hepatitis B surface antigen [HBs Ag], anti-HBs and anti-HBc. All sera had high concentrations of anti-HBc and most sera tested were positive for HBs Ag. IgG and IgM were measured by immunodiffusion. The production of anti-HBc specific IgG and IgM seemed to be the result of a host immune response to a hepatitis B virus [HBv] infection. Since HBv infection may be the leading cause of hepatoma, the detection of anti-HBc specific IgG and IgM is important.
