Diabetic pregnant rats were given a diet with 72% sucrose or a stock diet. Normal controls were given a stock diet before and during pregnancy, the sucrose diet during pregnancy only or the sucrose diet for 3 to 4 weeks before pregnancy and then throughout pregnancy. Glucose 350 mg/100 g bodyweight was given by mouth on the first day of pregnancy and on day 15 or 16 of pregnancy when they were killed. Both groups of controls given the sucrose diet had a high rate of foetus resorption and a significant number of malformed foetuses. Resorption rate in diabetic rats was 52% in those given sucrose and 17% in those given the stock diet. Malformation rate was high in both diabetic groups. Blood glucose after the glucose load was not significantly different before pregnancy and at killing in any group except for diabetics given the stock diet in which it was less at time of killing.
