Strains of .alpha. hemolytic streptococci (102 from dental sources, 24 from blood and 33 from urine ) were studied for species identification on the basis of biochemical characteristics. The dental sources comprised dental caries (39), dental plaque (25) and normal tooth surfaces as controls (38). Of these, 157 (98.7%) could be speciated, 102 as viridans streptococci.sbd.Streptococcus sanguis (65), S. salivarius (21), S. mutans (13), all from dental sources; S. MG (2), 1 each from blood and dental caries; and S. uberis (1) from urine. Strains identified as group D streptococci, i.e., S. faecalis (40), S. bovis (13), S. faecium (1) and S. durans (1), were mainly isolated from urine and blood. Among the 65 strains of S. sanguis, 41.5% had evidence of Lancefield's group H antigen. Both strains of S. MG possessed group F antigen. Of the 55 strains identified biochemically as group D streptococci, 94.5% had evidence of group D antigen.
