General activity of hexokinase (HK) and its isozyme spectrum were studied in gastrobioptic material of healthy individuals and patients with atrophic gastritis. General HK activity of atrophic gastric mucosa is practically the same as that under normal conditions. Electrophoretic study revealed some differences: in addition to KH-I which is usually found in normal gastric mucosa, atrophic gastric mucosa always contained HK-II characterized by a rather high activity. Under normal conditions HK-II is absent or has a low activity. The coefficients obtained, which are the ratio of HK-II and HK-I activity in atrophic gastric mucosa, were 3.2 times higher, on the average, than the corresponding normal values. The revealed disturbances of redistribution of HK activity between its isoforms in atrophic gastritis are less pronounced than in malignant tumors, but are characterized by the same tendency.
