Hydatid disease was diagnosed in 139 patients of a total of 5000 examined at a hospital in France over a 2-year period. Most of the cases were of North African, Italian or Iberian origin. 94% of cases with hepatic cysts and 70% of cases with pulmonary cysts were diagnosed by immunoelectrophoresis and this method was more sensitive than the other serological tests used. Immunoelectrophoresis and/or conditioned haemagglutination are the tests of choice for the diagnosis of hydatid.
