A serological study was made of 400 sera from 200 patients with hydatidosis and of 1750 control human sera, crude fluid from cattle hydatid cysts being used as antigen. Immunoelectrodiffusion (IED) on cellulose acetate membranes was as specific as immunoelectrophoresis (IEP) on agarose gel but its sensitivity was slightly higher and it uses little antigen. In 10 patients with ruptured hydatid cysts a "gloved finger" image was obtained with IED 5 to 7 days after the rupture. The sensitivity of IED was increased by coupling to an enzymatic technique. The immune complexes precipitated with IED were treated with peroxidase-labelled antibodies specific to each class of human immunoglobulins. This assay (ELIEDA) permits one to follow the immunological evolution of hydatidosis and to identify IgM in ruptured hepatic cysts and IgA in pulmonary cysts.
