Studies on serum angiotensin converting enzyme in endogenous uveitis

The level of serum angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) was investigated in patients with endogenous uveitis. Assays were carried out spectrophotometrically with hippuryl-L-histidyl-L-leucine as substrate by a modification of the Cushman and Cheung method. Serum ACE levels were significantly elevated in patients with sarcoidosis as compared to controls (P < 0.0001). Patients with active ocular lesions had significantly higher levels of ACE than those without active ocular lesions in sarcoidosis (P < 0.0001). ACE was not elevated in Behcet's disease, Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada's disease and uveitis of unknown etiology. Determination of serum ACE activity is a valuable diagnostic, therapeutic and prognostic indicator in the clinical management of endogenous uveitis.
