Therapy with hydrazinopyridazine, a new antihypertensive vasodilatory agent, in combination with beta-receptor blocking substances

Patients (20) with essential hypertension were treated first with hydrazinopyridazine alone and then with a combination of pindolol and hydrazinopyridazine for a period of 12 wk. The average daily dose of hydrazinopyridazine was 79 .+-. 8.5 mg, that of pindolol 14 .+-. 3.1 mg (.hivin.X ). The monotherapy with hydrazinopyridazine effected only a statistically significant reduction of the diastolic blood pressure while the systolic pressure remained unaffected and it caused an increase in the pulse frequency by 17 beats/min as compared to that at the end of the placebo period. The combination therapy with pindolol and hydrazinopyridazine led to a highly significant reduction of the systolic and diastolic blood pressure in the sitting and in the supine position and also to a drop in the pulse frequency below the initial values at the end of the placebo pre-period. Of 6 dropouts, 5 had to be excluded because of severe side effects during the monotherapy with hydrazinopyridazine. The most frequently reported side effects were headache (10 cases), palpitation (9 cases) and edema (5 cases). The new drug has a good antihypertensive action and it causes the same side effects as the other known vasodilators.
