Strains (75) isolated during an influenza epidemic belonged to the A (H1N1) viral subtype; strains isolated in March 1978 belonged to the A (H3N2) viral subtype. According to the antigenic structure of the hemagglutinin, the freshly isolated strains of A (H1N1) were highly similar to the agents of influenzal epidemics in 1952-1954 and fairly similar to the strains of 1949. The application of the F. de Saint Grot criteria made it possible to specify the data on antigenic affinity of hemagglutinins and to outline a possible direction of further hemagglutinin variability of the modern A (H1N1) virus.
