Crystalline zearalenone revealed traces of zearalenone and .beta.-zearalenol in some extracts of cow milk. Zearalenone and .beta.-zearalenol were present in some sheep milk extracts at 0.001-0.002 ppm. Extracts of urine from the ewe also contained these compounds at levels 0.020-0.050 ppm also discernable with TLC within 24 h of administration of zearalenone. The female lamb with the ewe consumed all milk not used for extraction and exhibited the major sign of hyperestrogenism, an abnormally enlarged vulva, about 10 days after zearalenone had been administered to the ewe. Analytical reverse-phase HPLC is a very sensitive analytical technique for the analysis of these metabolites.
