HIV-1 transmission through breast milk: a case report

Evidence for transmission of human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) virus via breast milk is shown by the case of a 30-yr-old woman in Ludhiana, Punjab (India) who was positive for HIV-1 by ELISA and Western Blot (WB) assay at pre-operative screening prior to resection of an ovarian cyst. Samples of her milk and of serum from her 6-month-old infant were also shown to be HIV-positive whilst sera from her husband and 7-yr-old child were negative in both ELISA and WB assay. The women had undergone a Caesarian section in a government hospital followed by a blood transfusion at a village using blood from professional donors.
