Data from the official records of the Department of Agriculture, Punjab, supplemented by those obtained in a survey indicated that 33% of the area under rice (Oryza sativa Linn.) in Punjab was affected by bacterial leaf blight (BLB), caused by Xanthomonas oryzae. The affected area usually declined with an increase in disease intensity. The disease was widespread in the area where rainfall was high, the cloudy period was long and N doses were high. The epidemic of BLB reduced the yield more drastically (37%) than drought (22%) through the variation in yield losses due to drought was more.
