Leaves from healthy seedlings of the rice cv. IET 4141, resistant to Xanthomonas oryzae, showed higher nitrate reductase activity in vitro and in vivo compared with the leaves of the uninfected, susceptible cv. TN-1. After infection with X. oryzae enzyme activity decreased progressively with the disease. The higher peroxidase activity in infected plants might be responsible for the inactivation of nitrate reductase.
