Thirty-nine Hariana heifers aged 21/2-5 years with smooth or subactive ovaries (functional anoestrus) were given oestradiol benzoate (OB) 250 mu g i/m, melengesterol acetate (MGA) 0.5 mg/day orally for 14 days plus OB 250 mg i/m 48 hours after the last MGA feeding. Changes in ovarian function were monitored by rectal palpation. Oestrus was detected by turgidity of the uterus, the presence of a mature Graafian follicle in the ovary and behavioural signs. Ovulation was monitored by recording the disappearance of a follicle of pre-ovulatory size, the appearance of an ovulation depression and the subsequent development of a corpus luteum in the same ovary. 20%, 55.5% and 100% of heifers receiving the respective treatments showed induced ovulatory oestrus. After the induced oestrus, 10%, 55% and 90% showed a natural oestrus which appeared to be normal. Only 30% of a control group exhibited natural ovulatory oestrus.
