A method for introducing sulfonic acid groups on to a microparticulate silica is described. A mercaptopropyl bonded phase is formed followed by oxidation to the corresponding sulfonic acid. The packing material so prepared displays cation-exchange properties and was used to separate phenothiazines, which are used as psychosedatives.
