Investigations on the presence of antibodies to Tahyna virus in Romania

Tahyna virus, of which the main vector was previously found to be Aedes vexans (Mg.) and which has been isolated from various species of Aedes in different countries, was found in Romania in Culex pipiens L. To determine the status of C. pipiens as a vector of this virus in Romania, a serological survey was made for the first time for the presence of antibodies to Tahyna virus in man and domestic animals from 2 counties in Romania where C. pipiens occurred frequently, by testing sera from 1789 apparently healthy persons, 113 febrile patients (some with pneumonia symptoms) and 675 animals by means of the haemagglutination-inhibition (HAI) reaction. Specific antibodies to Tahyna virus were found in 1.4% of the healthy persons, in 3.5% of the febrile patients and in 4.7% of the pigs tested, but not in cattle, sheep or goats.
