Detection of precipitating antibodies against dermatophytes by means of counterimmunoelectrophoresis

Counterimmunoelectrophoresis was used to detect antibodies against dermatophytes in antisera from rabbits immunized with Trichophyton rubrum, Epidermophyton floccosum or Candida albicans and patients with dermatomycosis (T. rubrum, T. mentagrophytes, E. floccosum). Antibodies were detected in 35% of the sera from patients but in only 4% of sera from healthy persons. Precipitates were produced not only by using the rabbit and human sera and the homologous antigens but also with antigens from other dermatophytes and sometimes with those from Scopulariopsis brevicaulis.
