Pretreatment with triiodothyronine significantly increased the mortality of rats given a single large oral dose of ethanol. Death ensued because of respiratory arrest in most animals, but in some signs of cardiac decompensation were also observed. The mean blood ethanol concentration was significantly higher in hyperthyroid rats as compared with euthyroid ones 1-2 h after administration. The signs of lethal ethanol poisoning apparently are largely similar in hyper- and euthyroid rats. The more rapid absorption and distribution of ethanol may be a factor which contributes to the increased toxicity of ethanol in the hyperthyroid state.
