After acute or sub-acute intoxication in rats, thallium (I) nitrate was readily absorbed and quickly distributed throughout the whole body. This distribution can be described by a three compartment open model. In blood, thallium was slightly more centered within the erythrocytes than in the plasma, except during the redistribution phase where erythrocytes seemed to play a role in transport of thallium. Immediately after intoxication, thallium was eliminated predominantly by the kidneys. After short term treatment, an increase, in faecal thallium elimination due to the enteroenteric circulation was noted.
