Co2+ inhibited cell free protein synthesis directed by natural mRNA. However, when synthetic polynucleotides like Poly U and Poly GU were used as templates, there was no inhibition of translation in Co2+ treated cell extracts. In vivo, the polypeptide chain elongation rate declined to half during Co2+ treatment.
