Levels of proto-, copro- and uroporphyrins in the internal organs of patients who died of chronic circulatory failure and malignant tumors were compared. Porphyrins were isolated exclusively from neoplastically unaltered tissues. In tumors porphyrin levels in various internal organs were higher than in chronic circulatory failure. Chromatographic studies demonstrated pathologic metabolism of pyrrole pigments in tumor patients. In both disease groups, porphyrin levels were highest in the adrenals, followed by the liver, which in circulatory failure showed increased uroporphyrin fractions.
