Hycanthone therapy in selected patients with S. mansoni and S. haematobium infections in the Sudan

In the Sudan, hycanthone was given intramuscularly at 3.0 mg/kg body-weight to 455 patients infected with Schistosoma mansoni, 137 with S. haematobium and 9 with both parasites. Faecal and urine examinations 6 weeks and 3 and 6 months after treatment of the patients who reported for follow-up (220, 94 and 49 respectively) indicated cure rates of 90, 97 and 97% for S. mansoni and 81, 91 and 911% for S. haematobium, respectively. In the patients not completely cured there was a significant reduction in egg output. Nausea and vomiting were the most common side effects.
