Effect of hydrocortisone on pathomorphologic changes and recovery processes in experimental ascariasis

Hydrocortisone in doses of 0.4, 4.5, and 21 mg/kg body weight was given to guinea pigs triply infected with Ascaris suum invasive eggs. Hydrocortisone injections at doses of 0.4 and 4.5 mg/kg had no influence on the development of allergic reactions in the lungs, liver and heart of guinea pigs. Hydrocortisone at a dose of 21 mg/kg reduced the exudative-infiltrative phase of the reaction in the same organs without decreasing proliferative processes. Discontinuation of hydrocortisone injections, irrespective of the dose, resulted in a sharp enhancement of liver parenchyma alterations slowing down the restorative process in this organ.
