Administration of patulin, a potent mycotoxin, and feeding of Penicillium patulum contaminated diet to rats for three months, caused marked increase in blood glucose levels accompanied with a decrease in the activities of pancreatic lysosomal marker enzymes namely cathepsin B and acid phosphatase. A relation between the activities of lysosomal enzymes and production of insulin by islets of .beta.-cells seems to exist.
