1. A total of 859 subjects initially agreed to participate in a clinical trial to elucidate the suitability of the role of several chelates and lactones as calculus solvents or inhibitors. Malic acid, cysteine hydrochloride and gluconic acid lactone in 5, 3 and 1 per cent concentrations respectively were hence chosen for the purpose. Five hundred forty-one individuals ultimately responded to the recall after having utilized the solutions as a part of their daily oral hygiene routine for a I5-day experimental period. The quantitative trends and the magnitude of decrease evidenced in the mean calculus scores of groups using the solutions did reflect a positive capacity to react on calculus. However, the statistical analysis of the results revealed negative significance when compared with the placebo for between-group correlations. 2. It was concluded that under the circumstances of this study, malic acid, cysteine hydrochloride and gluconic acid lactone, could not clinically be claimed to substantiate as effective calculus solvents or inhibitors.
