A general survey is made of recent data on the structure of dehydrogenases examined by X-ray diffraction method and by various spectroscopic probes and specific chemical modification. The basic results of indirect methods are in accord with the facts established by X-ray diffraction studies of dehydrogenases. The mechanism of cooperativity in GPD [glyceraldehyde-6-phosphate dehydrogenase] is discussed. It is concluded that both basic mechanisms (preexisting and induced asymmetry) provides a structural background of cooperative phenomena.
