The urinary excretion of free amino acids was measured in 15 men who made up one of 3 teams which took turns to assure that at least one team remained airborne at all times during a 96-h continuous alert. The team studied was airborne for 8.5 h during daytime on each of 4 successive days. The findings strongly suggested that the men showed anticipatory stress during the early part of the first 2 flight days of the alert, after which the excretion of amino acids was almost unaltered. Amino acid excretion during the 24 h after the alert was in accord with basal values established for another group of subjects.
