In recent years gastroenteritis caused by Vibrio parahaemolyticus posed a major public health problem. As much as 8-10% of the total gastroenteritis cases annually admitted into the Infectious Diseases Hospital, Calcutta [India], are caused by this halophilic vibrio. Antibiotic sensitivity pattern of 230 V. parahaemolyticus strains, isolated from gastroenteritis cases in Calcutta during 1972-1976 was determined by the agar plate dilution method. Ampicillin, kanamycin and streptomycin were apparently ineffective for these strains, whereas gentamycin and chloramphenicol inhibited 99.2% and 92.6%, respectively, of the strains tested . Doxycycline, neomycin and tetracycline were moderately effective for V. parahaemolyticus. The results of the present study show that chloramphenicol is the antibiotic of choice in the treatment of gastroenteritis caused by V. parahaemolyticus.
