Antibiotic sensitivity pattern of enteric pathogens

The antibiotic sensitivity profile of all strains of Shigella (55), enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (EPEC) (29) and non-typhoidal Salmonella (23), isolated from children (.ltoreq. 5 yrs) treated for acute bloody and non-bloody diarrhea during July, 1985 to December, 1986 was determined. All (100%) isolates of Shigella were sensitive to gentamicin, norfloxacin and nalidixic acid but high degree of resistance was observed to streptomycin (94.5%), ampicillin (81.8%) and erythromycin (69.0%). Salmonella showed maximum sensitivity to norfloxacin (100%) and nalidixic acid (82.65) followed by furazolidone (69.6%) and gentamicin (60.9%). EPEC was sensitive to nalidixic acid (100%), norfloxacin (100%), gentamicin (96.6%) and cephalexin (89.7%). Majority of the strains of all the three enteropathogens were sensitive to norfloxacin, nalidixic acid, gentamicin and furazolidone and resistant to ampicillin and chloramphenicol. Multidrug resistance was found in 50.9, 78.3 and 24.1% of Shigella, Salmonella and EPEC stains, respectively.
