The increasing number of cases of sexually transmitted pathogens (including Giardia lamblia and Entamoeba histolytica) reported since 1972 within the sexually active, male homosexual population of the New York City area is reviewed. Current epidemiological and prevalence studies indicate that the true incidence in this area is probably much higher than previously estimated. The difficulties of diagnosis are briefly discussed.
