Thelazia worms in the eyes of British cattle

In response to the letter of Thienpont (Vet. Rec. 100 (13), p. 271), Arbuckle points out that Thelazia rhodesii has not been found in British cattle. In a 1976 abattoir survey in Britain, of 3,348 Thelazia collected from bovine eyes, 2,162 were T. gulosa and 1,186 T. skrjabini. Thelazia in British cattle may be a frequent subclinical infection and until more evidence of the pathogenicity of these parasites is available, attempts at treatment may be premature.
