A cytogenic screening programme for the rob.t (1;29) translocation, started in 1987, was set up so that a breeding programme could be devised to try and reduce the incidence of the translocation screening of 269 British White cattle, including 203 which were part of the programme and 66 from a local herd, showed that 67.2% of 268 cattle (no definite diagnosis could be made in one animal) were carriers of the rob.t (1;29) translocation. 86 (73.5%) of the 117 animals recorded to have been born before the start of the screening programme, and 65 of 99 animals known to be born since the start were carriers. The ratio of normal:heterozygous carrier: homozygous carrier was 31 : 62 : 24 and 34 : 51 : 14 in the two populations, respectively. There was no significant difference at the 5% level between the two populations. The results indicate that British White cattle have the highest incidence of carriers of the rob.t (1;29) translocation compared with other breeds investigated. The data also showed there was no reduction in the incidence of the translocation in the post-screening population compared with the pre-screening population.
