Bacterial population of the eyes of slaughter cattle

Eye swabs from 1028 slaughter cattle, 20 of which had keratoconjunctivitis, over a 2.5-year period, yielded Moraxella bovis from 5%, Branhamella catarrhalis from about a third, Bacillus (mainly B. polymyxa) from 77%, Staphylococcus epidermidis from 69%, Streptococcus faecalis from 45% and Corynebacterium bovis from 4%. The occurrence of keratitis was significantly related to that of M. bovis, but not of the other organisms. There was a seasonal variation in the occurrence of Branhamella catarrhalis.
