Twenty-five (0.032%) of 78 779 cattle slaughtered had caudal vena caval thrombosis. Each of the 22 cases examined in detail had caval thrombi, with hepatic abscesses in 19, pulmonary abscesses, emboli, pneumonia and, or pleuritis in 17, renal petechiae in 12, haemorrhage in the spleen in 5 and cardiac lesions in 2. Fusobacterium necrophorum was present in the vena caval thrombi in 19 of 22 cattle; Actinomyces (Corynebacterium) pyogenes was isolated from the thrombi of 5, and 2 or 3 bacterial species from 9 thrombi. Of the 19 cases having F. necrophorum in the caval thrombi, the organism was found in the liver of 14, and all samples from abscesses, except one hepatic abscess, and pulmonary emboli and endocardial vegetations.
