With the aim of producing an antibody status in parent birds which would provide high levels of antibody in their chicks, a propiolactone-killed antigen was prepared from a virulent infectious bursal disease virus (53/70) and emulsified in liquid paraffin. Quantified gel diffusion precipitin tests showed that i/m vaccination of chicks at 3 or 6 weeks old, followed by a second dose 28 days later, produced a uniform antibody response which was higher than that following natural or experimental infection with live virus. These vaccinated birds are being retained to see how well they transmit the antibody to their offspring.
