A study evaluated earlier data that had been used to construct some of the mathematical formulas currently used for calculating energy expenditure (EE), revealing that the difference in EE values calculated using the different formulas covered a range of ca. 3%. It is shown that this variance can significantly affect long-term energy balance studies and the accuracy attainable using current respiratory energy balance chambers. The reasons for this variance are discussed, and a new set of reference data and a newly derived formula are presented for use in energy expenditure calculations.
