Energy expenditure of pilots flying cargo aircraft

Energy expenditure was estimated from oxygen consumption by the use of a Douglas bag for 21 engineering test pilots on 18 flights in 3 types of cargo aircraft, one jet-powered, and a helicopter. Mean value for energy expended in routine flight was 49.3 kcal per sq. m per h, not significantly different from the 47.7 kcal per sq. m per h expended during preparation for flight. During emergency procedures in a simulated emergency expenditure rose to 70.2 kcal per sq. m per h.
